Hand rejuvenation advice from Dr Lorenzo Garagnani, Consultant Hand Surgeon & Aesthetic Doctor

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

As many of you already know, at SE1 Medical Aesthetics we love all things geared around safety in the medical aesthetics industry. We also LOVE supporting local independent businesses. When searching for an aftercare product to complement Dr Lorenzo Garagnani's Hand Rejuvenation Injections Masterclass protocols, imagine our sheer joy at bumping into the lovely Candice, founder of Manisafe, at CCR (the UK's flagship event in Medical Aesthetics, uniting surgical, dermatological & aesthetics specialities) in London last year.

Candice Quinn is a local London resident & founder of MANISAFE. With a 15 year career in healthcare and medical devices, Candice has always been an advocate of a healthy lifestyle. Skin health and sun protection have been a passion of hers. When Candice was introduced to gel manicures in 2012 - it was love at first gloss! From boardroom meetings to motherhood, it became a mainstay in her beauty routine. But Candice explains that she later discovered that the nail lamps used to set her gorgeous nails are also a source of UV exposure so she started looking into potential solutions and decided to develop the Manisafe range of protective gloves.

In the meantime, at SE1 Medical Aesthetics, Dr Lorenzo had also been looking into solutions for delaying the ageing process of the hands via protective measures, as well as aftercare solutions for his techniques for rejuvenating hands.

A current hot topic is hand rejuvenation, especially it has become obvious that there is a disparity between the hands and the face in those who undergo facial aesthetic treatments. Traditionally, the focus has been on the face, neck and décolletage only. What about the hands then? Don't let them give the game away!

Dr Lorenzo recently wrote a fascinating article in Aesthetic Medicine Journal HANDS: no longer to be held behind you back. 'When it comes to rejuvenation, facial treatments have traditionally been prioritised over hand aesthetics. SE1 Medical Aesthetics medical director Lorenzo Garagnani looks at the importance of hands throughout history. Read the full article here.

Candice explains that Manisafe multi-award-winning gloves are dermatologist recommended and rated UPF 50+, meaning they are protective against UVA & UVB rays, making them sun protection gloves suitable for driving, outdoor activities and hand rejuvenation treatment aftercare. Especially for those with photo-sensitivity due to health conditions or medications.

We should all, at very least, be applying SPF 30 or 50 to the back of our hands to reduce the risk of skin cancer and to help delay the ageing process. However, if you want to go that step further and pay the same respect to your hands as your face, here are Dr Lorenzo's top tip suggestions:

  • Why not incorporate your hands into your twice daily, am and pm facial skincare routine? Use the excess serum or cream that is already on your hands and spread it to the back of your hands.

  • Always add SPF to the back of your hands. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we tend to wash our hands more frequently, so remember to top up regularly! Or, if you are pushing a pram, gardening or playing sports, and your hands are in direct line to the sun's exposure, why not go the extra mile and invest in a pair of Manisafe gloves to keep your hands looking healthier and more youthful for longer. (SE1 Medical Aesthetics patients can purchase Manisafe gloves directly in clinic to save on postage!)

  • If like Candice, you regularly visit the nail salon, why not keep a pair of Manisafe gloves in your handbag ready for each trip? It takes only a second to slip them on before putting your hands under the gel setting lamp. There is a recent published study about the risks of UV nail polish dryer lamps. Read more here

  • Maybe consider a consultation to discuss hand rejuvenation? Similar aesthetic injections to those used for the face, neck and décolletage can be used to rejuvenate the hands. You can book a consultation with Dr Lorenzo at SE1 Medical Aesthetics, London Bridge here
