Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that uses tiny, sterilised needles to prick the skin. The purpose of this treatment is to generate new collagen and skin tissue to smooth, firm, and tone skin. Microneedling is mostly used on the face to improve the appearance of acne, scars, dark spots, wrinkles, and large pores, however, it can also be used on the body, and is great for improving stretch marks.
There is a great paper available to read, published in the Indian Online Dermatology Journal in 2016, explaining microneedling and also, the advances in instrumentation at that point in time, 'Microneedling: Advances and widening horizons' authors Aashim Singh and Savita Yadav.
Their abstract reads, "Microneedling is a very simple, safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapeutic technique. It was initially introduced for skin rejuvenation, however, now it is being used for a very wide range of indications including acne scar, acne, post-traumatic/burn scar, alopecia, skin rejuvenation, drug delivery, hyperhidrosis, stretch marks, and many more. Moreover, during the last 10 years, many new innovations have been made to the initial instrument, which was used for microneedling. This technique can be combined with other surgical techniques to provide better results. In particular, it is a very safe technique for dark skin types, where risk of post inflammatory pigmentation is very high with other techniques that damage the epidermis. In this review article, we are updating on the different instruments now available for this procedure, and its efficacy when performed alone or in combination with other techniques for various indications."
Step forward 7 years on from that paper and there have been even more exciting advances in microneedling instrumentation, SE1 firm favourite being the 'DermaFrac.'
At SE1 Medical Aesthetics London we decided to introduce the DermaFrac® microneedling system to our treatment portfolio, based on our own trial of the system. Emma, SE1 owner and practitioner, had one session and was stunned with the results. The before and after pictures from this session are shown below. These are both immediately before (left) and after treatment (right). There is a visible improvement in her skin texture, tone, hydration, laxity and pore size. If you pay particular attention to the tear trough region (the area under Emma's eye) and her nasolabial folds (the curved vertical creases that run from her nose to the far corners of her mouth), you will notice a vast improvement with regards to the vascular pigmentation, fine lines and plumpness of the recesses. What pictures can't show is that Emma's skin felt much smoother to the touch also.
DermaFrac® is an advanced combination therapy utilising fine crystal based microdermabrasion, microneedling and simultaneous infusion from a wide range of highly powerful anti-ageing serums. Each session is completely tailored to your needs during the skin rejuvenation process of the treatment.
As we age skin loses its firmness and becomes defined by wrinkles and fine lines. At any age skin can be blighted by open pores, congestion and acne scarring. This treatment is designed to revive and regenerate ageing skin whilst also banishing open pores, congestion and acne scarring and helping with resistant pigmentation. The gentle needling allows the powerful anti-ageing serums to penetrate deeper, resulting in total skin rejuvenation, which is not only long lasting but also delivers firmer, smoother and healthier looking skin.
Incredibily the Dermafrac® microneedling stage can also be used on the eye area and the lips. This is perfect for those who are not suitable for tear trough filler, or those who don't wish to have lip filler treatment.
The treatment is minimally invasive, requiring little to no downtime depending on your body's natural response and also the depth of needles used. It’s considered safe for most people who are in overall good health. The procedure may not be suitable for people who use certain acne medications, for those with active acne, or for those with moderate to severe psoriasis or eczema. We always assess your suitability before your appointment date.
